CLOTHING MOTHS: Natural Remedies and Registered Biocides
There are a lot of products our there that claim to work against insects. Here’s the guide to what you are being sold:
Unregistered and Natural products
Natural products such as lavender and cedar wood do have some repellent tendencies but the truth is that these products are unregistered and therefore unregulated. These products are generally sold with claims that are unsubstantiated and without any supporting data to tell you how long they last or how many products are required to treat an area. It’s pot luck when you buy these.
These products are unregistered meaning that they cannot make claims that biocides can make.
Biocides and registered products
Biocides (PT18 or PT19 products) are those which have been supported and registered with a National authority such as the HSE in the UK. When a product is approved by the HSE it means that the product and its supporting data has been validated by an approved body and awarded a registration. This registration is shown on the back of pack in a form of a registration number).
Only registered biocides can make such claims as KILLS, ATTRACTS, REPELS and CONTROLS. If the product you are buying isn’t registered then it isn’t able to make claims and more importantly, the product is untested and unqualified.
